How we identify the organisations for assessment
In 2024, Global Canopy identified the 175 companies with the greatest influence on Brazilian cattle supply chains based on their exposure to beef and leather, and the 75 financial institutions with the greatest influence on those companies.
The selection of the Floresta 250 – Cattle organisations is based on two criteria:
- Risk of being linked to deforestation in Brazil through involvement in or potential exposure to beef and leather supply chains
- Influence within the political economy of deforestation in Brazil.

Selecting the companies
Companies were selected based on a variety of different metrics that indicate their exposure to beef and leather, and thus to deforestation risk. This exposure was identified for companies operating in or sourcing from Brazilian cattle supply chains. All producers and processors selected are headquartered in Brazil, alongside the majority of traders. Manufacturing and retailing companies are split between Brazilian companies and those operating outside of Brazil to reflect the global nature of these supply chains.

Once the 175 companies were selected, the 75 financial institutions with the greatest influence on Brazilian cattle supply chains were identified. They are the banks, pension funds, asset managers and other financial institutions with the greatest exposure to deforestation risk – and those with the greatest power to transform Brazilian cattle supply chains.
